Lately, I have been inspired by Wynton Marsalis’ awesome records from around 1985: Black Codes and J Moods.
At the same time, I feel very strongly about the deep rhythm & blues of Randy Newman and Dr. John. (The thing I hear in Bob Malachs’ playing)
A combination of both? Nah. Sounds unrealistic.
Aiming for the best of both worlds? Sounds better already.
It has truth, it has tension. Deep sound, deep drums. Deep sax.
Feeling music, not something that appeals to the intellect only, as a privilege.
More the Steely Dan kind of wink wink: funny but classy. Not arrogant.
Gospel has that. But no hypocrisy in my house about any religion. So I mean gospel music. Also, it has to swing. If you try to translate swing into pop music, you get rock ‘n roll.
It has to be pleasureable to the ear. And my ears are sensible motherfuckers.
